Nowadays, energy conservation and emissions reduction remain the main themes. As a result of response to the call, many water-coolers were replaced by air coolers in the oil refining chemical industry, chemical industry, electric power and metallurgy industry, etc. The performance was significant and the subject of improving the air cooler's own defects aroused the interest of many researchers. After years of research, evaporative air cooler appeared as a new type of air cooler in the eyes of people, and showed its high performance in many industries. However, the inlet temperature was the biggest limitation. This made the precooling type evaporative air cooler with a section made up of fin pipes in the front of entrance became inevitable.This paper discussed the process, types and corresponding calculation methods of heat transfer in precooling type evaporative air cooler. These were used in analysis, calculations and process design for the pilot plant experiment system of precooling type evaporative air cooler. On the basis of the two, a checking software was developed as a computer-assisted tool.Calculation of precooling type evaporative air cooler was divided into two sections, which were dry type air cooling and wet evaporative air cooling. According to each sections inlet and outlet flow rate and temperature of gas and liquid, the process was classified into six items including their respective five heat transfer type discussion. Corresponding physical parameters were queried, and then calculation was carried out. With the permutation and combination of the actual process and type, the whole calculation results were obtained.On the basis of a set of old pilot plant, analysis and design of the precooling type evaporative air cooler pilot experiment was carried on. The experiment plan was determined as hot water cooling and steam condensing. Experimental medium and their properties were found. The process was designed and PFD was drawn. We also designed the pipes and instrument control scheme. At last, List of pipes and main instruments were given.We established the experimental mediums' basic physical property database and the type and parameter database of fans and pumps. Combined with heat transfer calculation methods and analysis and design of pilot experiment system, We applied MFC of VC++6.0 software in developing a checking software which was suitable for checking the calculation and design results of precooling type evaporative air cooler. To some extent, the software contained calculation method design of the six kinds of heat transfer process including their respective five types for different types of fluid, which ensured the software's good applicability. The directory made calculation process clear at a glance. The software was user-friendly and easy to operate. The reliability should be verified by experiments.
