The heavy machine tool plays an important role to develop basic industrial sectors such as iron and steel, nonferrous metals, coal, petrochemical, building materials, power, railway and to enhance the international status of China. Shenyang Machine Tool Co. started to research and develop the NC heavy-duty horizontal lathe with 80 ton loading. This paper investigated some key technical issues on the development of HTC250800super NC heavy-duty horizontal lathe. It includes the following mainly tasks:(1) Through the analysis of the working condition and the typical structure of the machine tool, the main structure and the overall plan of the lathe are determined. Through the design of the overall and analysis of key parts, the design method of the heavy duty horizontal lathe is discussed.(2) The main structural elements of HTC250800super CNC heavy-duty horizontal lathe bed have been calculated by the finite element analysis to ensure the reliability of structure. The bed process tolerance and the guide rail span are analyzed and calculated to obtain reasonable span of the guideways. And this methodology can be used as reference to the design of similar products.(3) The main transmission system of HTC250800super NC heavy-duty horizontal lathe has been studied, including the headstock transmission structure, analysis of spindle structure and rigidity, dual-drive spindle box structure and transmission work state analysis.(4) According to the characteristics of heavy-duty machine tool, the structure of high rigid electric tail base, tool holder and two axis feed have been studied. In view of the characteristics of the lathe operation and the reliability, the solutions for improving structure were put forward.(5) By means of trial production process, some problems of the structure and layout of the lathe have been found, and the solutions were put forward to solve these problems.Through the research of the key parts in the design stage, the mechanical structure of the lathe is optimized. The working performance of this lathe is improved, and the quality of the product is improved significantly. This research work is of great significance to optimize the design of this kind of machine tool products, and to enhance the competitiveness of product innovation.
