High-rack flare and ground flare system has different advantages on technical and performance aspects. More middle scale petrochemical factory start to select ground flare system for purge gas disposal process for their safety and less environment impact. While confined by process capacity of ground flare system, high-rack flare system still predominate the purge gas combustion system in large scale chemical plant. Researches on high-rack flare still have great value on chemical industry. The main task for a flare system is the determination of flare height and diameter. The height and diameter has great influence not only on the area of the whole factory, but also the overall investment and further reconstructions. This thesis discusses the progress on flare system for these years, and for a practical high-rack flare system design in an ammonia plant, some improvement and adjustment on flare process have been raised to achieve a more economical and safe flare system, this thesis focus on the determination of Mach number and radiation heat number and noise level number which three affect flare height and diameter most. The main conclusion is as follows:the final designed diameter of main flare gas pipe is 1200mm, and the flare diameter is 2.17m, the flare height is 45m. The location of flare are determined by noise level calculation,on the other hand,for the problem on flame arrester device on daily running, some improvement has been raised on equipment selection and structure design,which shows a more economical and safe flare system.
