With the rapid development of communications and electronics industry, electromagnetic pollution has become the fourth-largest public nuisance after the atmosphere, water and noise pollution. In order to reduce the electromagnetic pollution, ensuring the reliability of the equipment and the safety of the human body, electromagnetic shielding materials have been widely studied. As electromagnetic shielding material is presently developing along the line of light-weight, thin-thickness and wide frequency-range, fiber-filled composites has become a research focus in the field of shielding materials. Among the influence factors of the shielding performance of the fiber-filled composites, the fiber performance is considered to be the most important one. This paper adopted two kinds of methods in preparation of magnetic layer on SSF surface. The first one is preparation of iron nickel alloy magnetic layer on SSFs?Fe/Ni-SSFs? by electro-deposition. Effects of the pretreatment, plating and heat-treatment process on the SSF surface morphology and performance have been investigated and the optimum deposition process has been obtained. We investigated the influences of Fe-Ni ratio and heat-treatment process parameters on the soft magnetic performance of Fe/Ni-SSFs. Besides, we have studied the growth mechanism of the Fe/Ni alloy magnetic layer on the SSFs by observing the surface morphology and phase analysis. The second one is preparation of Fe3O4 plating on SSFs?Fe3O4-SSFs? with good soft magnetic performance. Effects of plating solution and plating process on the morphology, composition and performance of Fe3O4-SSFs have been investigated and the Fe3O4 deposition mechanism has been studied by observing the surface morphology and phase analysisAfter the preparation of the surface magnetic layer, we have prepared the ABS based electromagnetic shielding composites filled with short Fe/Ni-SSFs. Compared to the composites filled with short SSFs, the electromagnetic shielding performance has been improved significantly, which indicates that electromagnetic shielding in full frequency range of composites filled with SSFs can be realized by this method.
