Tool electrode is the key process tool for using EDM to completing injection mold production. There are hundreds of tool electrodes in one injection mold. The quality of electrodes can affect injection mold manufacturing efficiency and product quality directly. The traditional methods of electrode design and producing required the ability and experience of electrode designers. Electrodes are the most consuming parts in molding production and electrode design becomes a very hard and repeated work. Therefore, according to the urgently need of mold enterprises, developing a more intelligent and more comprehensive electrode CAD system to help designers to design electrode fast and efficiently is of great significance for mold producing.In view of the questions above, this paper analyzes the characteristics of EDM manufacturing and the structure and design requirements of tool electrode. The shortcomings of the previous electrode design systems are also researched in the paper. Based on the requirements analysis, the whole structure and function modules of new electrode CAD system is established. On the basic of analyzing algorithm for EDM manufacturing area identify, a new electrode design method based on numerical control simulation technology is proposed. By numerical control simulating for the mold and identifying narrow-deep feature, the area where needs EDM manufacture can be located in accordance with IPW. In addition, two-dimensional drawing and BOM for electrode have also been researched.All works mentioned above have been embedded in the electrode design CAD system based on UG/NX. The system consists of these functions including the designing of electrode, editing the electrodes, drawing two-dimensional drawing and managing BOM information. It can greatly improve the electrode design efficiency.
