High-pressure abrasive water j et(AWJ)cutting is a new kind of materials processing technology, with process adaptability, incision of good quality, cold machining, and environmental protection, has been widely used.In this paper, the surface quality of hard-brittle materials cutting by high-pressure AWJ is experimentally studied, the effect of processing parameters on surface quality was investigated. The process empirical model for the smooth zone depth of cut and surface roughness are established. These researches for AWJ technique has important theoretical significance and application value. In this paper, based on the theory of AWJ,the mechanism of AWJ cutting has been studied.Cutting process includes water wedging action, impact and erosion action of the abrasive, still the microfabrication action of abrasive on the cutting surface. The effect of jet pressure, target distance, cutting speed and abrasive flow rate on the granite and marble smooth zone depth of cut and surface roughness was investigated. The results show that the smooth zone depth of cut increases, whereas the surface roughness first decreases and then increases when AWJ pressure enhances. The cutting depth of smooth cutting zone decreases, but the surface roughness increases when target distance increases. The smooth zone depth of cut decreases rapidly, but the surface roughness increases when cutting speed enhances. The surface roughness decreases, whereas the smooth zone depth of cut first increases and then decreases when abrasive flow rate increases.By orthogonal test, the cutting parameters of granite, marble and Alumina ceramic were experimentally optimized.Optimization objectives is the smooth zone depth of cut and surface roughness. The selected process parameters are the jet pressure, target distance, cutting speed and abrasive flow rate. The results show that effect of cutting speed on the smooth zone depth of cut and surface roughness is very significant for granite, marble and alumina ceramics hard-brittle materials.Jet pressure is a secondary factor.Target distance and abrasive flow rate on the optimization objective is weak.Combination of orthogonal experimental data, the process empirical model for the smooth zone depth of cut and surface roughness are established. These models were significant by hypothesis testing. This paper made six experiments which proved that the theoretical predicted by the empirical model is good agreement with the experimental result, and can satisfy the engineering requirements.
