Short electric arc machining is a new type of special machining technology that carried out by utilizing directly electric energy and thermal energy.And the method has many advantages in the machining of materials,such as no cutting force,high machining efficiency,process easier to control and little influence on thermal deformation.The machinability of the material depends on its electrical conductivity and thermal property with little relevance with its mechanical property.So this unique characteristics of the short arc machining technology is particularly suitable for machining high strength and high hardness of difficult-to-machine materials,this new special machining method can solve difficult-to-machine materials machining bottleneck.And the innovative research on deep hole trepanning machining is great significance to broaden its range of application and solve the deep hole trepanning machining of superhard materials.In this paper,the features of several typical difficult-to-cut materials were introduced.And the working principle and machining mechanism of short electric arc machining were analyzed,put forward the metal corresponding theory and the discharge mechanism,determine the influence factors of discharge material removal in the workpiece and the influence factors of electrode head material loss.In view of several typical difficult-to-machine materials(stainless steel,titanium alloy,and high temperature alloy)short arc machining experiment and analyzed,the arc machining characteristics and influencing factors of various kinds of materials was identified.According to the trepanning machining characteristic,the system of the short electric arc in trepanning machining and the electrode tip were designed.By analyzing and comparing several group of experimental data,the most optimal machining parameters and the factors of influencing machining results was chosen out.After the difficult-to-machine material being processed,detection and analysis to its metallographic structure and the change rule of hardened layer and the thickness of heat affected layers are carried out,the arc processed material properties and heat affected layers change is not obvious,will not affect subsequent mechanical machining,and the short arc trepanning machining technology provides necessary theoretical basis and machining method of practical application.
