Cellulose is a renewable biological material with good mechanical properties,flexibility,breathability and recyclability.Cellulose is hydrophilic because of large amount of hydroxyl groups,which can adsorb water molecules.It is important to construct superhydrophobic cellulose-based materials with waterproof,anti-fog,and self-cleaning.In this study,cellulose-based hydrophobic materials were fabricated through physical and chemical modification of filter paper.Hydrophobic poly(2-perfluorohexylethyl methacrylate)(PFHEMA)-coated filter paper was fabricated by a simple dip-coating method.The absorption peak of CF3 and CF2 at 1273 cm-1 and 1217 cm-1,and the carbonyl C=O absorption peak at 1739 cm"1 were appeared in the modified filter paper,indicating that the surface of the filter paper was successfully covered with fluorine-containing low-surface-energy polymer.Due to the lack of micro/nano structure in the surface,the contact angle of PFHEMA-coated filter paper was 138°.The increase of amount of low energy substance on surface of the filter paper can not make the filter paper superhydrophobic.Filter paper with modified has good resistance to acid or alkaline solution and the separation of oil-water mixture efficiency up to 95%.Improve hydrophobicity of filter paper,hydrophobic poly(dodecyl acrylate)-modified filter paper was fabricated by grafting dodecyl acrylate from the surface of filter paper with a surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization(SI-ATRP)method.IR analysis showed that the absorption peaks of CH3 and CH2 functional groups were significantly enhanced,and 1739 cm-1 appeared on the surface of filter paper.When the grafting rate was 14.6%,the contact angle of the filter paper is 146° and reached a stable state.The filter paper has good chemical stability and the separation of oil-water mixture efficiency up to 95%.Superhydrophobic filter paper was prepared by grafting 2-(perfluorooctyl)ethyl methacrylate monomer from the surface of filter paper by Si-ATRP.IR and XPS showed that PFOEMA were introduced into surface of filter paper.The superhydrophobicity of filter paper increased with amount of PFOEMA grafted.When DG of grafted PFOEMA was higher than 11.2%,the superhydrophobicity reached a steady state and the measured water contact angle was about 157°.The PFOEMA-grafted filter paper exhibited excellent chemical stability toward a wide range of pH solution from 1 to 12.Paper-g-PFOEMA is convenient for oil/water separation with efficiency higher than 95%.The excellent reusability and stability makes Paper-g-PFOEMA a promising candidate in the applications of oil spillage cleanup and the separation of oil/water mixture.
