The traditional Chinese food culture has a long history with broad and profound contents. Pastries are one of the most glorious parts in the food culture. As a tool to make fancy pastries,Yingao (a type of pastry) wooden moldsare not only a physical form of the society, but also the expression of traditional Chinese folk culture and aesthetic standards. In this paper,the Yingao wooden molds used in the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China era are taken asthe subject of study, and the shape, structure, decoration, and meaning of Yingao wooden molds are analyzed deeply from the perspectives of design and folklore. In the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China era, there were a large number of Yingao wooden molds,but as a kind of necessities of life for every family in the past,it is difficult to find such molds in the modern households.In this paper, the emergence and development of pastries are expounded first, and the emergence and development history of Yingao wooden molds are deduced. Then Yingao wooden molds are classified multiple times from the angle of systematy. In Chapter three, the materials, processes, and manufacture methods of Yingao wooden molds are thoroughly studied,and the author summarizes the influence of several types of traditional folk art on Yingao wooden molds. Chapter four is about the study on the aesthetics of Yingao wooden molds. It mainly elaborates from two aspects, the beauty of decoration and function. The author focuses on analyzing the themes and patterns of Yingao wooden molds, and finds the constitution patterns and formation rules of the decoration based on the analysis results.Finally, starting from the emergence of Yingao wooden molds cultural, this paper studies the social culture, folk culture, and the implicit traditional concepts of creation behind the Yingao wooden molds.In this paper, the period from the Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China is taken as the time interval of study. By studying such aspects as the decoration, modeling, function, and culture of Yingao wooden molds, the author analyzes its inspiration to modern design, and discusses where folk handicrafts will go in the society with highly developed mechanization.
