In recent years, due to the greenhouse effect,a series of natural environmental problems have appeared such as global warming, glaciers disappearing, and sea level rising,so countries around the world are concerned about the imbalance of the natural environment. The excessive use of fossil fuels such as coal and so on,which is an important cause of greenhouse effect. What's more,China is in the process of rapid urbanization currently.Urbanization and carbon emissions have become the focus of academic circles under such background and it also raises a controversial issue: what is the relationship between urbanization and carbon emissions? Based on the study of the development status and spatial characters about urbanization and carbon emissions in China and with the help of spatial econometric models and threshold models, this paper also analyzes the influence mechanism of urbanization on carbon emissions from the perspectives of industrial structure and technical progress to solve the mystery of the impact of urbanization on carbon emissions in China. From the perspective of industrial structure, the main conclusions about the impact of urbanization on carbon emissions in China are as follows.(1)The similar resource endowment, industrial development pattern and the "bottom to bottom competition" behavior of local governments lead to the spatial interaction of regional carbon emissions.(2)The "expansion effect" dominates the urbanization in China, and the "quality effect" is not obvious.(3)The "structural dividend" brought about by the advanced industrial structure has promoted the development of the economy to show the service characteristics, and the technological progress and the technical substitution effect are beneficial to the promotion of carbon emission reduction.(4)The "structural dividend" of the advanced industrial structure helps to reduce the high carbon emissions caused by the "expansion effect" of urbanization, and the effect shows spatial heterogeneity. From the perspective of technical progress, the main conclusions about the impact of urbanization on carbon emissions in China are as follows.(1)The coefficient of urbanization is significantly positive in the three different spatial weight matrix of the spatial autoregressive model,so it can be considered that urbanization is an important reason for the increase of carbon emissions.Regression coefficient of energy saving technology is significantly negative at 1% level,so it can be considered that the energy saving technology has a "rebound effect" on carbon emissions. While the regression coefficient of environmental protection technology is significantly positive at 1% level,it can be considered that the progress of environmental protection technology has not produced a "rebound effect",which effectively inhibited carbon emissions.(2)The cross terms of urbanization and energy saving technology is significantly positive at 1% level, which means that the rebound effect of energy saving technology progress on carbon emissions has been alleviated under the influence of urbanization. While the cross terms of urbanization and environmental protection technology is still significantly positive at 1% level.(3)The impact of urbanization on carbon emissions will show nonlinear threshold characteristics due to the temporal and spatial differences of energy saving technological progress and environmental technology progress? Finally,on the basis of theoretical research and empirical research, this paper puts forward some suggestions on how to reduce carbon emissions in the process of China's urbanization from the perspectives of industrial structure and technical progress.
