When the insulators of transmission lines and electrical equipment have been long exposed to the air, there will be salt, dirt, soot, and other filth deposited on the outer surface of the insulator, in bad weather conditions, the electrical strength of the insulator will be reduced greatly, and then flashover discharge occurs, which will make a huge loss to national economy. Therefore, conventional contamination detection of insulators is the guarantee of power system 's safe production. In this paper we use a microwave radiometer measurements to get the insulator surface antenna temperature(TA). Studies show that TA has a complex nonlinear relationship with ESDD?NSDD?Te and RH. In order to express the nonlinear relationship exactly and eliminate the influence of the Te and RH, the paper proposed a least squares support vector machine(LSSVM) mathematical model optimized by PSO to achieve the expected function. The simulation results show that the prediction accuracy of constructed LSSVM model is high, which has reached practical application standards. The ESDD of insulator contamination is the primary factor of identifying pollution level and drawing the polluted area of power grid distribution. Solving ESDD correctly will ensure the safe operation of power grid. TA, Te, RH can be obtained by constructing mathematical model and measuring, and the inversion can be achived by using variable step iterative method. The results show that: the model can achieve inversion ESDD in the allowable range of error, improve the correct rate of the contamination level determination, and has a high practical applied value of engineering.
