Cylindrical shell is a common structure which has the characteristic of small thickness, light weight, supplies and good performance.The vibration phenomena of the cylindrical shell is widespread in the production & life, The vibration hazards involving almost the main commercial areas of the national economy. In aerospace engineering, Huge economic losses due to lot's of machinery and equipment damaged under vibration & retirement in the shell of the aircraft fuselage, the space station, the cabin of the spacecraft, missiles, satellites, aircraft engine casing. Thus improving the control of vibration is of great significance.Reduce and eliminate harmful vibration of the actual project structure is the very prominent issue in the design of engineering structures. For cylindrical shell structure of the composite layer, It carried out in-depth study of an important direction is the vibration and control of the structure is necessary. Due to antilever thin-walled cylindrical shell covered with viscoelastic material has obvious vibration suppression effect, we could use viscoelastic damping material to reduce and eliminate harmful vibration of cylindrical shell structure in actual project engineering, partially coverage is used as a way to reduce the size and weight of the shell.The main research contents of this paper are as following:(1) The software ANSYS is used to do numerical simulation, including:selection of unit type, input of material parameters, the solution of nature frequency and loss factor.The FE model of cantilever thin-walled cylindrical shell is updated by experimental results which prepared for the FE model of free damping cylindrical shell.(2) The updated FE model of cylindrical shell is used to do father numerical simulation of the shell fully coverd with free layer damping, including selection of unit type & finit element type of damping material.we can get the inherent characteristics of the shell fully coverd with free layer damping and its damping effect.(3) The damping design method presented due to previously mentioned results, we get related calculations in accordance with the method. We get the damping effect of method including optimization of damping material layout;optimization of response amplitude in finite element method and optimization design of modal damping ratio.
