Grid And Unit

The materiality of architecture determines the inevitable relationship between design and construction. However, under the impact of image culture and digital technologies, the trends of architectural design turn to space and vision, ignoring the concerns of its physical part and leading to a deeper gap between design and construction. This phenomenon is particularly prominent in Chinese contemporary architecture, resulting problems in quality of construction. Based on the analysis of this issue, this thesis starts with grid system and the unit system, in order to propose a design strategy based on the construction of logic.This thesis starts from three parts. The first part defines the concept of grid and unit and discusses the research significance and methods. Additionally, the evolution of relationship between design and construction will be clarified, and the connotation of design and construction of grid and unit will be studied respectively. The second part is the core of the thesis, focusing on the design strategy based on grid systems and unit systems, including the operation, the detail and the extension of grid systems and unit systems. In terms of grid, this thesis discusses it in four levels, including establishment, form control, and structure positioning and component subdivision.The thesis also includes the relationship between surface and structure and the detail of corner. The applications of the facade and the spatial grid further expand the use range of grid. In terms of unit, this thesis studies the operation method of unit itself in two aspects of linier unit and plane unit, and the connection detail between units as well. Additionally, the thesis discusses the application of modular technology in unit.The third part summarizes the design strategies based on grid system and unit system,and the practical significance and research prospects of both are discussed as well.Along with the theory discussed in this thesis, related cases are deeply analyzed through the methods of field research and graphical analysis, leading to the summary of specific operation methods and hoping to form reasonable and clear design strategy in order to guide related architectural practice.
