Rectangular reinforced concrete water tank with girderless floor is a typical representative of rectangular tanks. This water tank is used as a main reservoir in water supply and sewerage engineering. It has such advantages as beautiful appearance and easy arrangement in the water plant. As less building materials are used than other water tanks of the same volume, the water tank with girderless floor is considered to be in an economical and reasonable structural form.When underground water is at a high level, some water tanks have to be built with thick concrete bottom plates. The thick bottom plates are designed as resistances to buoyancy force for stability. Based on the measure of thick bottom plate,equivalent frame method is used to analyse the inner force variation of the water tanks with different side walls and bottom plates.It comes to a conclusion that equivalent frame method must be restricted.Equivalent frame method is used in analysing structural performance for rectangular reinforced concrete water tanks under the restrictive condition which this paper suggests.Three other methods are introduced as resistances to buoyancy force for the water tank's stability besides the measure of thick bottom plate. A water tank which has been built is given as an example in this paper. It is a rectangular reinforced concrete water tank with girderless floor. Tension piles are used in the water tank project.The moment values of the water tank are calculated in an equivalent frame method and under software circumstance.The software is programmed by applying the finite element method. The comparisons of the two calculation results are obvious,but they follow the same variation law of bending moments. The reason why two methods make difference is given in the end of the paper. The water tank is reinforced according to the calculation results. The security and reliability of the water tank have been testified by the application of the water tank.
