In recent years, with the rapid development of our country's economy and the accelerating progress of urbanization, the construction of the new cities together with the rebuilding of old ones have also been accelerated, which consequently has caused severe damages to the traditional culture and historical features of many old cities.More and more cities have lost its own characteristics for the missing of historical sites and cultural heritage. Therefore, the development and protection of ancient districts has become main urgent problems to be faced and solved in most cities which requires the conformation to the original urban texture and the coordination between urban modernization and the ancient cities' protection in order to remain the feature of ancient cities in this current moderation, meanwhile make a better progress of urban areas.With the success inscription of the ancient city of Pingyao and Lijiang, the academic study on historical cultural cities also caused widespread concern and the protection and development of the ancient cities has become an important part of the modern cities' progress. Therefore, how to combine the protection and development of the ancient cities, how to provide new ideas for the development of modern ones have become an important task showing before us.This article, taking the city of Shangqiu, Henan as its research object and focusing on the problem of ancient cities' development and protection, will carry out the study of relevant information and on-the-spot investigation, aiming to provide a certain clear strategy, hopefully some future relevant value for the development and protection of the ancient cities through an in-depth research on this city's history,evolution, current situation, pattern of progress and the existing problems, the improvement and the protecting measures and so on.
