Study On The Traditional Residential Buildings In Yongzhou Of Hunan

With the opening-up of our country and the social developemnt,China is embracing different cultures and advanced technology from other countries and regions.Meanwhile,the urban and rural construction is progressing at an unprecedented speed.The traditional dwellings are disappearing along with the advancement of China new rural construction.Throughout the history of Chinese modern architecture,the architecture differences between north and south are diminishing because of the assimilation of folklore and local culture.Now the identity crisis around the world is approaching to us.In fact,Chinese traditional dwellings re the embodiment of traditional culture.And the architecture forms manifest the folk and regional characteristics.But due to the time character of architecture and the weakness in infrastructure,traditional dwellings can’t adapt to the modern lifestye and satistfy the "high standards" of modern life.Much studies have been done on the traditional dwellings in China.In the 1940s,Chinese dwellings were defined as a type of architecture for the first time.In 1988,researchers of traditional dwellings set up Chinese Academic Committee of Traditional Dwellings.From then on,conprehensive studies on traditional dwellings were conducted from multiple angles.Scholars in colleges and universities of Hunan have published monographs and papers analyzing Yongzhou tradiational dwellings,which demonstrated the culture,foramtion,functions and forms of Yongzhou tradiational dwellings.All the previous studies provide importance reference and instruction for this thesis.Located in the juncture of Hunan and Guangdong,the dwellings in Yongzhou are greatly enriched under the influence of the unique geographical environment and climate of Yongzhou,as well as the great migration.Based on the field study,the author elaborates the basic cultural and geographic conditions in Yongzhou,Hunan.This thesis compares different forms of traditioanl dwellings in Yongzhou and illustrates the connotations and regional characteristics of dwellings in Yongzhou.Moreover,this thesis demonstrates the history changes of dwellings in Yongzhou and their corresponding reasons respectively based on the period characteristics,culture,clan system and academic concepts.The uniqueness of traditional dwellings in Yongzhou is highlighted through the demonstration of their styles,structural layout,materials and decorations.Yongzhou dwellings satisfy the people’s living requirement while protecting the nature,which achieve a harmony between human and nature and manifest the spirit of the harmony and integration among heaven,land and human,as well as contain an adaptive mechanism.The connotation of Yongzhou dwellings always keep up with the Chinese style architecture and take up an irreplaceable position in the architecture history.By studying Yongzhou traditional dwellings,this thesis aims to display its inspirations to the development of modern architecture and attract attentions from the schalars on the traditional dwellings.
