Substation is an important part of the whole power system and plays an important role in the process of transmission and distribution. At this stage, substation is developing towards the direction of digital and intelligent. So its network system becomes more and more complex and its requirement of real-time, security becomes more and more high. Performance of substation communication network is not only related to the efficiency of power supply but also affects the electrical experience of the user. Today, to establish a reliable and security substation communication network is the need of the developing power grid. The international general standards IEC61850 speed the process of digital substation technology development. There are numerous domestic and overseas research institutions pay attentation to the sbustation automatic system that based on the standard of IEC61850. In the face of complex and diverse substation system, however, the real-time, reliability and security issues are still highlighted. And sometimes it may affect the application of system. Therefore, the analysis and study on the performace of substation communication network not only has theoretical value but also has more practical significance.At first, this paper elaborated the main content and function of IEC61850 standard. And it did a detailed research and analysis on the implemetation of this standard from three aspects, such as function modeling, data modeling and communication service modeling. Then it discussed the digital substation communication network structures and compared the performance such as reliability, network latency, and economy of network. This study did some research on the improved network structure from the view of reliability. By analyzing and building mathematical model of the data stream in three layers of digital substation structure such as station level, bay level and process level, which lay the foundation for the parameter configuration in network simulation. Then this study used OPNET software for digital substation communication network simulating. The network model was established by using OPNET software, from three aspects such as node layer, network layer and business layer. At the same time this paper put forward a new modeling method in the business modeling and maked the model closer to the actul network. Finally, by controling the parameters, such as message size, transmission time interval, link bandwidth and background utilization of CPU using control variable method, ethernet delay, the real-time property of important comunication traffic of digital substation are simulated contrastively using OPNET. Then we draw some corresponding conclusions. In view of the simulation analysis, this paper put forward the improvement measures. The analysis and research of IEC61850-based substation communication network performance in this paper is meaningful and valuable for actual transformer substation.
