The IEC61850standard is the latest and most authoritative international communicationsstandards, it is widely used around the world. The standard’s ultimate goal is “one world, atechnology, and a standard”. One of the key which makes the substation automation systemfrom traditional to digital type is communication technology. IEC61850standard applied in thesubstation, can promote the production of different enterprises IED interchangeable andinteroperable. Most countries of the world are committed to research the application of IEC61850standard for substation automation system, which is very necessary for the earlyrealization of the seamless connection of substation communications. Substation communicationis equivalent to the central nervous system in SAS, and the standard is very important tosubstationcommunication, so studying network architecture and performance of communicationsystems is of great significance.This paper first summarizes the core technology in the IEC61850standard, and thenanalyzes the GOOSE model and the sampled value model and mapping services. According tothe substation communication architecture features, the network structure of process bus andsubstation bus based on IEC61850standard is researched. Technologys of communicationswhich are currently more popular are introduced. Campared to the three basic topology, it is usefor choosing the tpye of network topology in practical applications. According to the real-time,reliability, and security features, the substation communication networks system requirements isanalysed. According to uncertainty analysis of communications network packets end-to-endtransmission delay, the factors affecting the delay uncertainty is obtained.Substation systems are complex and serious electromagnetic interference, so direct on-sitetesting is often not feasible, and mathematical analysis is often not able to make the modelaccurate. It’s just for this reason, the best option which is for research substation communicationnetwork performance is to use simulation. Because of OPNET simulation software has a lot ofadvantages, it has become best choice to be simulation. Finally, in this paper, taking D2-1substation as an example, after node modeling and network topology modeling, the substationOPNET simulation model is established. Starting the opnet simulation is by the size of controlpackets, sending time interval, the background of the CPU utilization, bandwidth, and throughthe analysis of simulation results, we conclude that these factors impact the real-time substationcommunication system. This work in this paper is a reference for the actual substationcommunication network construction.
