Research On Urban Public Space Design Strategy For The Area Linear Along Nanjing City Wall Of The Ming Dynasty

With the development of China city, the role of the city wall is no longer as defending invasions from enemies, but becomes a physical form of city development timeline. Historically, city wall not only has the close connection of pattern of city frame but also records the rise and fall of Nanjing. It is a symbol of city's memory. As a city that used to be six-time capital in Chinese history, the city wall of Ming dynasty is one of the most important carriers of historical culture. Currently, city wall of Ming dynasty in Nanjing is gradually developing to an urban loop greenway. Under the dual goal of protecting historical heritage and creating urban greenways, the primary task is how to appropriately using the space to process the environmental management and design. Multiple places, which are the interaction of city wall and city interface, make more space places of scale diversify, shape variety and function differentiation.In this paper, employ the theory of heritage protection as the foundation, and the basis on external space theory and behavioral psychology, use urban public space as the main body of study and City Wall of Ming Dynasty in Nanjing as the target. The study is processing on four aspects, the city wall itself, the connection between urban and city wall, space particularity, and interaction between human and city wall. In details, this paper will study plazas, parks, streets, and public buildings around the city wall, and separately develop and summarize their development, current statement, characteristic, and weakness. Meanwhile, pick three typical spaces of interaction between the city wall and urban space, and using sd method to research user's feedbacks of the space preception about city wall.Finally, Nanjing City Wall of Ming Dynasty could be able and suppose to be built become a public space loop system, and create positive affect about urban cultural heritage and activation of urban space. Nevertheless, the city wall has a various tendency, complicated level difference, and enormous different of statement between inside and outside the city wall. Thus, one single general solution could not address these issues appropriately, and it needs differential methods for various spaces and making more precise designs for actual demand. At the end of the paper, I come up with four principles and create four design strategy and four place-making mode due to detailed design.This thesis includes 56000 words of straight, counting about 112 pictures and 6 tables.
