| Architectural history in the traditional sense is mostly completed by professional researchers of architectural history or art history. The official historical documents, local city maps and ancient architectural works they thought to rely on recorded a lot of large-scale landmark buildings, which developed architectural technology and accumulated heavy architectural culture, and to a large extent expressed the mainstream of architectural history development. However, the formation of "orthodox architectural history" ignores those urban space scenes which are small-scale,life-oriented and closely connected with social and public activities. For this reason,we can only find a new way to restore historical scenes through extensive literature and text materials recorded by non-architectural professionals.Nanjing public space in the Ming and Qing dynasties,as the stage of citizens’ daily life activities, can truly reflect the use of buildings in the Ming and Qing dynasties and the social landscape of Nanjing city,so as to have a certain understanding of the comprehensive situation of social culture related to architectural activities. However, the expression of urban public space scenes has been lacking for a long time. Therefore, this paper chooses Nanjing urban public space related to social public activities in the Ming and Qing dynasties as the research object, based on the interpretation of ancient literature and painting works to explore the characteristics of Nanjing public space in the Ming and Qing dynasties and the cultural motivations behind it.To be specific, this paper first elaborates on the characteristics of text interpretation and relevant theories, and constructs the research method of space scene. Then starting from the scholars, this paper discusses the composition of public space in Nanjing in the Ming and Qing dynasties from the perspective of the professional logic of architecture with the text as the carrier, and then selects two typical space scenes as the cases for in-depth study.Through the narrative scenes created by literati in novels and notes and the most intuitive visual language formed by painters in their paintings, this paper makes a rational analysis with the research method of space scene construction and combines the relevant research results to try to restore a historical space scene that is closer to the cultural pattern of the time. Finally, the social and cultural factors behind the formation of public space in Nanjing in the Ming and Qing dynasties were analyzed to form a systematic cognition of the public space in Nanjing in the Ming and Qing dynasties. Therefore, the research method of interpreting urban public space and constructing urban space scenes from ancient texts is of certain reference significance for the study of ancient Chinese urban space. |
