The Study Of Architectural History And Protection Strategy For The Former International Export Company In Nanking

The International Export Company is the earliest British company branch in Nanking. It was established in 1913 and during the following a hundred years has experienced the history vicissitudes of itself and also of the whole city. After the establishment of the People's Republic, those buildings remain in the site was renovated and reused by Nanjing Meat United Processing Company and afterwards Tianhuan Company. Before the company's removal, some of theproduction equipment dated to the early 20th century can still run, those large scaled main buildings remain well-preserved. All of them witnessed the vicissitudes of history, witnessed the advance of industrial process and become an important part of the culture. The whole remain of the International Export Company has a unique position in Chinaas one of the earliest modern food processing and cold storage enterprise.Through textual research it is found to be the largest, the most complete and had the most advanced technology and facilities in China's modern meat processing industry at that time. So it has milestone significance in China's modern food processing industry.After the meeting held on the "World heritage day"in Wuxi in 2006, domesticacademia presented further ways to study the strategy for protecting industrial heritage. From then on, the industrial heritage protection has becoming increasingly significant. More and more cases which renovated industrial heritage for modern and multiple usesare emerging. As such a tremendous, relatively preserved and time-honored industrial heritage, the former International Export Company still lacks of relevant academic research results.This paper will study on the origin and the history of the foreign firm, and combined it with contemporary heritage protection theories to discuss the update methods and measures, in order to light up its unique features and invoke its vigor and vitalityin the new era.
