In the development of landscape architecture, landform has evolved into the important landscape element and more and more attention is paid to landform design. Aiming for the landform element in modern landscape design, the thesis traces the history, reviewing the different ways of applying landform to landscape design on different stages, collects works of landform design widely and conducts them in depth to find out different types of classic cases with great significance. The study is on the basis of these works in order to have a more comprehensive understanding about landform design. The first chapter of the thesis is about the current situation of the landform landscaping in both theoretical and practical aspects. The second chapter traces the evolution of landform application in landscape design, clarifies that some influencing factors such as abstract art, minimalist art and earth art have played an important role in the development of landform design. At the same time, the chapter concerns about extended use of landform in other areas such as infrastructure, gaming facilities, public space and so on. The third chapter sorts out some landscape architects who are interested in landform design through studying a series of works that are divided into four types ("independent geometric landform ", "combination rule landform"," art curve landform" and "natural abstract landform") from the basic morphology at first. Then the chapter analyzes on the bases of this classification to research different design skills and through analyzing the important cases to understand understood the background and ideas to be expressed in them. In the fourth chapter, there is a comprehensive summery of landform design in the aspect of landscape design practice. The thesis researches the Western works of landform design, and finally presents the understanding of terrain landscaping in the context of China and propose that we should combine Chinese traditional gardening skills with western design philosophy.
