In recent years, with China’s economic and social developmentof the city, urbanization process is accelerating, the growing scale of city construction. Landscape construction as an important part of modern city construction, in improving the city’s ecological environment, improve the city residents quality of life, meet the people viewing needs and plays an important role in promoting the sustainable development of the city.However, with the rapid development of city construction andbrings a series of problems, such as:city landscape tends assimilation, dehumanization, ecological imbalance and transition develo-pment, cultural loss. In view of the above problems, many scholars began to change to the local landscape, fully realize the integration into the local landscape elements in the modern city landscape, is the inevitable trend of the development of city landscape. Vernacular landscape elements is an important manifestation of regional and local culture, the advantages of plain, in the modern garden into thevernacular landscape elements can enhance the landscapeidentification, improve the utilization rate of transmission of local context, landscape, improve the ecological benefits, enhance the sense of belonging and a sense of home.Therefore, this paper is based on the theory research has been through case analysis into the vernacular landscape elements in the modern landscape design, which has an important practice meaning to our modern landscape design in the future.In the second part, elaborated the vernacular landscapeelements into the concepts involved in the modern landscape design, including local, landscape, rural landscape, modern landscape; and expounds the theoretical foundation, the corresponding such as: environmental behavior psychology theory, the theory of landscape ecology, landscape aestheticstheory,sustaina-ble development theory, to lay the theoretical foundation solid as an example to study the next. In the third part of the thesis first analyzes the typical characteristics ofvernacular landscape, respectively, from the external and internal characteristics; then described the classification and landscape elements of vernacular landscape, including naturalvernacularlandscape (local landform, plant, color, material,symbol), artificial vernacularlandscape (artificial structures,decorative pieces), non the material of vernacular landscape(traditional custom, geomantic omen, religion); finally,expounds the significance of application of vernacular landscape elements. In the fourth part of the thesis is the overall summary into the vernacular landscape elements in the modern landscape design, which is analyzed from aspects of design objectives, design principles, design strategy and theconcrete design method, aims to establish a model for the nextexample analysis. The fifth part is a landscape design as an example, through the introduction of base location, the local resources, application and analysis of the specific design concept, idea, content and local elements. In the sixth part of the article discussed the planning and design of rural landscape in China, discusses the requirements and design ofthe prospects of our future rural land-scape planning and design. At the end of the paper summarizes the research work,the problems in this study, as well as the work of the next stage, hope for the future of our country into the study ofvernacular landscape elements in the modern landscape design to provide a reference.
