As the congregation of urban function, the city disease of land use, transportation and environment is increasingly prominent in the process of urbanization and mechanization. To improve the function of pedestrian system in central area in large cities is an important way to make the transportation system work environmental friendly and effectively, which can also make the city a vitality space for resident. Since the infrastructure construction in central area in large cities has already done in the long period of development, the existing pedestrian transportation system can not catch the growing demand in right of way, safety, accessibility and environmental friendliness, which calls for a problem-oriented planning method. The characteristic of traffic environment in central area of is concluded from large cities from land use, road system and public traffic system. The trip characteristic as composition, purpose, time, distance and land-use type of origin and destination and traveler attributes like gender, age and job is analyzed by Nanjing household travel survey data in 2012. Based of the characteristic analysis, a hierarchy of pedestrians' needs is established. Then this paper proposed the principle and process of pedestrian transportation planning in central area in large cities, and elaborate the content and key points of each step. The connotation on network structure of pedestrian transportation system is definite at first and abstracted as space structure, topological structure and functional structure, the relationship of which is discussed then. On the one hand, from the study foundation of mechanism of how space structure influence walking, quantitative indexes of space structure are put forward from land use and transportation system, which are counted based on the theory of buffer analysis by the data from current geographic information data of central area of Nanjing city. On the other hand, from the study foundation of mechanism of how topological structure influence walking and how to generate an topological network from the reality one, quantitative indexes of topological structure are put forward and counted. The data of the space structure and topological structure on each walk road section is clustered as 5 road type, which constructed a functional structure of pedestrian transportation system in central area in large cities. As a part of travel space, public space and architectural space, the study range of walking space is defined. The content of walking space and walking environment is been studied to establish an analytical index system. The correlation between the indexes is been checked using Pearson's correlation coefficient based on the data of walking road section in central area of Nanjing. By using explanatory factor analysis,5 factors are extracted from these 25 variables, which represented the main influence aspect on walking space and walking environment.A collection of improvement solution for pedestrian transportation system in central area in large cities is proposed based on the main 5 factors about walking space and walking environment. Using CART decision tree algorithm, the decision-making mechanism of factors and rules is been studied on the data of pedestrian transportation system improvement solution decision of Nanjing, which can be applied in other cities. The relative and comprehensive important degree between each improve solution is calculated to establish the matrix of improvement. Method of improvement plan is generated from both the compare of improve solution and compare of walking road sections, which make an research reference and technical guidelines for the improvement of pedestrian transportation system in central area in large cities.
