Environment And Behavior: The Research On The Planning Of Pedestrian System In University Campus

Walk is the major transportation way for most students and faculty on campus. As the material carrier of walking act, pedestrian system of campus makes direct effect on the walking act. In the past, the amount of students and vehicles were relatively small, so they harmonized with the scale of campus. However, the increase of college enrollment and private cars sharpen the contradiction between students and vehicles. And it has become a threat to the safety of students and faculty. In order to solve this practical problem, this thesis discusses about the planning of pedestrian system on campus.Since most of the previous researches focused on the pedestrian system itself, but ignored the pedestrian activities. Basing on the theory of environment and behavior, taking"human behavior"as the starting point, this thesis attempts to discuss how user's behavior requires pedestrian system's physical environment and then summarize the planning method of pedestrian system on campus.Firstly, the thesis sums up relating theories, including theories and typical cases of pedestrian system both in and out of China, theories and methodology of environment and behavior. Then it analyzes the physical and behavioral elements of pedestrian system according to the theories of environment and behavior. In this process, several research methods of environment and behavior are conducted to grasp the rule and characters of walking act, such as field surveys, interviews and questionnaires. It continues to summarize the planning method of pedestrian system basing on the result of previous study. Finally, there will be a case study of Hunan University by means of the planning method.The significance of this study is to enrich and improve the domestic relating theories and play a guiding role in the future design of pedestrian system on campus. At present, there are few researches on pedestrian system on campus in China. Therefore, to some extent, this thesis will enrich the domestic theories in this field, and then guide the planning of pedestrian system on campus, creating a harmonious campus for human beings and vehicles.
