With the rapid development of information technology and substation equipment manufacturing technologies, digital substations, with its high performance and reliability, have been paid more and more extensive emphasis and promotion. As compared to traditional substations, digital substations vary immensely in both hardware structure and software composition. Digital substation relay protection test is the top priority of inspecting the reliability of the substation automation. Whether the test method is sound and reasonable is directly related to the reliability of substation operation and power grid. During the early batch of digital substation construction, relevant regulations were being compiled and technology had been continuously improving and maturing, and there were many remaining issues as well. Deeply understanding the structure and rationale of digital substations, exploring digital substation relay protection and test scheme, eliminating remaining defect issues in the development of substation digitalization, and forming digital substation test standards according to relevant regulations have become important contents and tasks of digital substation construction at present.This article briefly introduces the development of digital substations. Based on their domestic construction and application, a comprehensive exposition of the station structures and equipment characteristics is given, with an emphasis on their SCD, CID and remote configuration. Also we make inductions of previous reported results of single set, whole stack running, debugging and loading test, and thus propose the standards and methods for debugging and verification in digital substations. Furthermore, analysis of primary component debugging and precautions are discussed in-depth and achieve excellent effects in practical digital substation applications. As the debugging equipment and methods change with the structures and devices utilized by digital substations, we extensively examine the effect of different tester connection and configuration on the testing results, and develop a detailed depiction of packet capturing and analyzing during network failure of digital substation. The summary of methods for digital substation debugging is of great significance as it greatly contributes to the improvement of working efficiency and quality, which is a big step for future application of digital substations.
