| Bruno Zevi for an Italian architectural theorist once proposed space is the leading role of the building,which is also applicable to Chinese traditional garden.To extract the rule of spatial form which hidden in Chinese traditional garden,this paper is from the perspective of different time and space concepts of West and China,and with a new perspective that introduces the internal and external corner theory and interprets the dynamic feelings that complex lines and shapes bring to people through a lot of case analysis,generalizations and ideograph expressions.By means of comparison with the static of simple space in western gardens and the motility of complex space in Chinese traditional garden and then graphical conclusion,the paper concludes that the essential difference between Chinese and western gardens is time that hidden in the complex space.Therefore,the author considers that Chinese traditional garden is not only the art of space,but also the art of time.Through the analysis,the paper concludes that time design is the essential difference between Chinese and western gardens,and suggests that the essence of Chinese traditional garden art is its more care to dynamic time while West classical garden art cares more about still space.This paper reveals that varying scenery with changing view-points is the synonym for time designing,and puts forward the necessary condition and types of lines for time design and induces the five space composition models of Chinese traditional garden art for time design: the complex shape,the complex center water,the corner buildings,three mountains in a pool and the composite path.It is easy to realize the modernization of the classical gardens in time and space design objectives through element transformation,scale moving,angle rotation and morphological adjustment and so on.Finally,the paper provides a simple and operational overall composition principle for inheriting the essence of Chinese traditional garden of time design. |
