Texture As A Method Of Space Operation

Texture is a kind of structure with serialized form, which has the dualism of "structure and form":structure reflects the way of entire organization, while form reflects the relationship of partial composition.The attention to the texture in this paper arises from the thinking of author about the issue of form in the design practices of undergraduate period:how to achieve the consistence of the form? After reviewing and analyzing two design practices, the author recognized "texture" as a design logic, which is able to respond to and extend them.On the basis of the design practice, the author seek for the issue of texture in architecture further. Starting from the meaning of texture and the existing form of texture in architecture, the paper tries to seek the autonomy of texture in architecture and explore the dualism of "structure and form" in the context of space as well as an abstract characteristic of operation.According to the three characteristics of texture in the context of space including characteristic of form, characteristic of structure and characteristic of operation, three methods of texture participating in the operation of space are deduced, that are the carrier of the space-compositing, the representation of system-structuring and the medium of configuration-operation. Besides, by the analysis of applying the methods to some cases, the mechanisms of texture participating in the operation of space are researched, that are starting from space or structure, single or group textures, constraint or open texture. The two above turn into the main body of research results in this paper.
