The asphalt concrete pavement plays a leading role in the construction of high grade highway, because it has the advantages of great driving comfort, excellent properties, high construction speed and convenient maintenance. But the rapid growth of heavy traffic and the frequent hot weather makes rutting become the most common and most serious distress of the high grade road It has been difficult to meet the requirements of the high standard of pavement under the new situation for asphalt mixture designed according to the traditional method, which has many defects such as fine aggregate content, high asphalt content, poor temperature stability, and so on.In order to get the skeleton type asphalt mixture, which has a great high temperature stability, the volume design method is studied in this paper. Firstly, the volume parameters of asphalt mixture were studied. The composition of the volume parameters and the volume parameters'influences on the properties of the mixture were analyzed. In this paper, the volumetric mixture design method based on multi-supporting framework condition (V-S design method) is introduced. The problems of the V-S design method are analyzed and verified. The aggregate gradation degradation caused by coarse aggregate particles in the mixture forming process was studied and analyzed in this paper. The protective effect of the coarse aggregate skeleton structure and the selection of the dividing line of the coarse aggregate were verified by experiments. According to the relevant theoretical research and experimental results, the V-S design method is improved and modified. Asphalt mixture which has a good control of the volume parameters and high temperature performance can be designed according to the modified V-S design method.
