Automobile exterior rear-view mirror as a kind of indirect vision device, is clearly defined as automobile safety part, and its main function is to provide real-time traffic information around the vehicle to the driver, which guarantees safe driving of the vehicle. If the function robustness of automobile exterior rear-view mirror is poor, which will inevitably affects the safety of vehicle driving, and so-called robustness refers to its insensitivity related to output to input when the system variation is tiny. High sensitivity is bad robustness, low sensitivity is good robustness.Domestic research on robustness still stay in method itself, there is no a set of scientific process to carry out robust design, so that robust design is difficult to get effective promotion and application, while some domestic enterprises are lack of knowledge management, there is no accumulation and utilization of engineers design experience and wisdom, leading to problems such as the loss knowledge wealth. In order to improve reliability and robustness of automobile exterior rear-view mirror, this paper puts forward to apply the Ford robust design process to design automobile exterior rear-view mirror at domestic. Firstly, this paper applys B-diagram, interface matrix and Parameter diagram three robustness tools to systematically analyze automobile exterior rear-view mirror, confirms the noise factors affecting its functions, the corresponding error states and control factor. Secondly, Robustness tools is used to aid the development of automobile exterior rear-view mirror Design Failure Mode and Effect Analysis(DFMEA), thereby DFMEA proactively identifies potential failure modes of product in the design phase. DFMEA as design input, the structure design of automobile exterior rear-view mirror is finished on the basis of class-A surface.Furthermore, reliability and robustness Check List(RRCL) is used to check the reliability and robustness of automobile exterior rear-view mirror, create relationship and influence degree between noise factors and error states, identify corresponding management strategies and design verification methods for each noise factor. Then relevant design verification methods in RRCL should be input to Design Verification Plan(DVP) to complete the relevant physical experiment and finite element simulation analysis. Finally, using reliability and robustness demonstration matrix(RRDM), this paper demonstrates the automobile exterior rear-view mirror to achieve the corresponding requirements of reliability and robustness.The paper applies the Ford robust design process to the design of the automobile exterior rear-view mirror, and applies physics experiments and finite element simulation analysis to finish design verification, the first-order natural frequency of rear-view mirror reaches 76.084 Hz, and is 26.8% higher than the technical requirements of 60 Hz. The maximum stress of mirror is 99.453 MPa, less than the material limit stress 130 Mpa. All test results are superior to the technical standards of automobile manufacturer, Therefore, this paper has realized the robust design of automobile exterior rear-view mirror and knowledge management in the design process.
