As a comprehensive term of speed, speed dispersion will greatly impact on traffic safety performance, due to a combination of "human beings, vehicles, roads and traffic environment". This paper studies the mixed traffic presented by the township sections of arterial highways. The township sections of arterial highways have the feature both of the main highway and urban road, which make the road traffic more complex. Therefore, the speed dispersion is particularly prominent in this kind of area. The evolution of speed dispersion is very complex, requiring special attention.Taking the township sections of arterial highways as examples, the common definition, distribution characteristics and laws of speed dispersion are studied under mixed traffic, considering the characteristic of mixed traffic in China. The township sections of arterial highways are classified to make the focus on a clear target. The UAV aerial survey is explored to obtain the vehicle speed fluctuations on the long road. Based on factor analysis, this paper explores the intrinsic link between high-dimensional factors and speed dispersion under mixed traffic. Build a multi-level speed dispersion cause model with multiple linear regression models. Due to the model, measures are proposed to reduce the speed dispersion, improving urban trunk road safety measures section safety. The study will provide a new idea or solution for speed dispersion evolution mechanism and traffic safety. And also, based on the study, much more reasonable and scientific measurements and methods can be designed for speed control.
