Automobile welding assembly is critical in automobile manufacturing, and a variety of welding fixtures are a top priority for the welding assembly, and then the design of welding fixtures is the premise and foundation. The traditional fixtures design can not satisfy development of advanced automobile welding assembly, hence the computer aided fixture design(CAFD) with the features of high efficiency and shortcuts emerges at a historic moment.The source, background and significance of the topic with the development trends of CAFD are introduced, and the present status of the development at home and abroad are analyzed, and the research theories of the topic are briefly described.Knowledge representation based on Ontology has great potential, which will promote the sharing and reuse of knowledge. The application of Ontology for knowledge representation is based on knowledge theories of automobile welding fixture design, focused on the research of Ontology development process for automobile welding fixture.On the basis of knowledge engineering and parametric technology theories, the rule library and reuse library of generative design for automobile welding fixture are studied in detail, the construction of knowledge database for welding fixture are presented to lay a solid foundation for the next step of the research and development for intelligent design system.The research and development of intelligent design system based on hybrid reasoning is on the running platform of UG/NX8.0, joining with programming tool Visual Studio2010 by dynamic link library(DLL) technology, to achieve seamless integration between the application development and UG/NX platform.The module functional structure of intelligent design system is investigated in this paper. Data configuration system, task management system, case management system, case-based reasoning design, generative design and hybrid-based reasoning design are constructed, and their functions are briefly described. The successful implement of the operation for intelligent design system and successful exhibition of the research results for this subject are demonstrated with an engineering design example.
