The smart home has twenty years’ history in China, but it is still not of necessity in ordinary houses. The reason is that there is no agreed standard among those equipment manufacturers. Forming a reasonable and orderly smart home manufacturing system is the priority at present.In recent years, the progress Internet of Things has made provide a favorable technical support for the development of smart home. In 2015, ARM released an operating system specifically designed for the Internet of Things called mbed OS. The mbed OS system is designed for the equipment of ARM Cortex-M series processor. This system has a robust security mechanism, a communication protocol supporting standards and driver components developed for the sensor, I/O devices, etc. Thus the purpose of directly controlling the hardware through the applications will be achieved. Currently, the sales volume of ARM Cortex-M series processor has reached one billion dollar. Therefore, the application based on mbed OS have a promising market prospect.The goal of this research is to take full advantages of the strength of mbed OS and the characteristics of wireless technology to provide a feasible plan for the formation of the whole smart home system. The system takes the mobile terminal as the user operation interface, uses wireless technology to form the smart home system and uses the mbed OS to control the hardware. The main functions of this system are video intercom, Wi-Fi location, environment detection and household application control, which are the urgent demands in the home smarting process. Considering various home environments, the system uses the modular design to provide a customized home intelligent experience for customers basing on the concept of a simple and convenient smart home.The main content of this paper can be divided into two parts: hardware part and software part. The hardware part focuses on the designing process of various function module of smart home system, including the analysis of the overall framework of the system function module, design and implementation of the audio and video collection, the coding, decoding and playing of audio, Wi-Fi signal strength acquisition, infrared signal transceiver. The software part discusses the realization of each function module of the application in detail, including the realization based on application program mbed OS, Wi-Fi location algorithm analysis and the development of mobile terminal application.
