The steering system of automobile plays an important part, and the structure and techno-capability of steering system is very significant to the safety driving. If there is something wrong with the steering system, it is easy to lead to disastrous accidents. The national standards GB 18565-2012 "Multiple performance requirement and detecting methods for commercial vehicles" and The national standards GB 7258-2012 "Safety specifications for power driven vehicles operating on roads" gives relative rules on max angle, free movement of steering wheel and steering moment. However the current detection method can not reflect the status of the steering system. Therefore it is necessary for us to make a deeper research on the detective mechanism. Only in this way can we provide the theoretical base for the detective steering system. The paper analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of the existing detection technology and the development of the steering system detection based on the review of the history and trend of vehicle detection technology and the development of vehicle steering system testing. Due to the lack of the existing detection method of the steering tie rod, the steering ball head and the steering knuckle, the paper will study the part and the main contents include the following aspects:(1) Inspection without disassemble and analysis of the steering tie rod. The test of the steering tie rod was made by eddy current detector and the test results were analyzed.After a period of time a test of the tie rod is added. The transverse rod is replaced if the crack has changed obviously between two test results.(2) Research on the detection without disassemble and evaluation method of the clearance of steering ball joint. The clearance of steering ball was measured by gap detector. The allowable range of ball gap was obtained through the relationship between the toe-in angle and the clearance value. At last the performance of the ball head outside the range interval was analyzed and evaluated.(3) Research on detection without disassemble and evaluation method of steering knuckle crack. The steering knuckle crack was detected by ultrasonic flaw detector. The strength analysis of the steering knuckle was carried out in the Workbench software under three kinds of dangerous working conditions and it is concluded that the stress concentration of the steering knuckle is the most serious in the uneven pavement condition. So the relationship between the crack depth and the fatigue life was built by simulating the fatigue life of the steering knuckle.
