Material handling machinery plays a more and more important role in logistics mechanization system. As the mechanization and intelligent is gradually shown in industrial activities currently, belt conveyor has been widely used in many fields, such as coal power system, iron and steel metallurgy system and so on. Especially in coal industry, when coal is mined, it is necessary to transport the coal from the underground through a belt conveyor, which bears a huge role in the process. The belt conveyor has different names according to its different structure, such as extensible belt conveyor, common belt conveyor, etc. The driving device provides a strong driving force for the whole transmission line, and it is an important component of the belt conveyor, therefore, it determines the using performance of the belt conveyor in a great extent.In the actual operation process of the belt conveyor, it is not uncommon that production activities have to be halted due to the failure of the drive part. In particular, it is shown as: oil leakage, heat and noise of the reducer; connecting bolt fracture of coupling; welding cracking and adhesive wear of drive pulley, etc. Once these failures occur, there are a lot of hidden dangers to the safety and stability of the equipment. Therefore, it is a significant project to study the failure rate and reliability of each part and the whole by using fault tree analysis. Through the research and analysis of the driving device, combined with the prediction of the reliability life, the paper gives some advice on the preventive maintenance, maintenance of the equipment.Research and analysis of the reliability, its purpose is to make the products can be the most compact in structure, the size is reduced as far as possible, and can also have a longer life based on more stable in using, in order to achieve the real sense of energy saving, economic, efficient and safe. The advantage of using fault tree analysis method to analyze the reliability of the equipment is that it can clearly and intuitively see the various causes of its failure, and it will be more accurate and convenient in the qualitative and quantitative analysis. At the same time, it should be clear that the logical relationship between the causes of each failure, using the correct event expression symbol and the logical relation symbol to express it clearly, avoiding overlapping interference between the causes of the failure to affect the results of the analysis. Although the theory and methods of reliability have been applied in many fields, and have achieved good results. However, in the belt conveyor, especially in the drive part, it also needs to be further in-depth study, and the paper is starting from the aspects, and starting the next analysis.In this paper, the belt conveyor drive device is the research object, and the reliability is the theoretical support, using the fault tree analysis method to establish the corresponding analytical model and to carry on the qualitative analysis and quantitative analysis, and finally using Visual Basic 6.0 software development platform to develop the application software which can calculate the reliability of belt conveyor drive device.
