Storage batteries play important roles as backup power supply in security and stability operation process of electrical power system in transformer substation. In the case of AC power loss or other accidents, batteries can provide power for switching operations of important equipments like circuit breakers. Once batteries have problems, standby power supply will face paralysis, leading to outage of power equipments and other major operation accidents. As a result, the reliability of batteries is related to safe and stable operation of power grid. However, during actual operation and maintenance, various unfavorable factors will reduce the performance and life of batteries. As a consequence, optimizing current operation and maintenance methods and acquiring real time accurate status of batteries has become the key to improve the reliability of standby power supply.Under current circumstances, how to detect early battery failure swiftly and effectively and forecast tendency of battery performance change has become new topic of battery operation management. Besides routine maintenance and detection methods like check discharge and terminal voltage measurement, new methods emerge with the development of technology, internal resistance online monitoring is being used to power system.In this paper, based on internal resistance measurements at home and abroad, a more reliable online monitoring method with no adverse effects on battery was put forward. And on the basis of imported core chip technology, constant internal monitoring technique for substation was intensively studied.Moreover, online monitoring of FTU batteries in terminal equipments of distribution automation system of Dongying power grid was analyzed and designed, thus remote monitoring and charge-discharge control for FTU batteries was realized, leading to increase of service life and reliability, decrease of workload and security risks caused by artificial maintenance and improvement of efficiency.Battery online monitoring technology discussed in this paper has changed battery inspection and maintenance from checking poles one by one to distance or automatic operation, leading to reduction of labor intensity of operators, personal damage, equipment damage and economic loss caused by incorrect operation, increase of service life of batteries and operation reliability of distribution automation system, which has great economic and practical values.
