With the rapid growth of national economy and the mature of national development, the production and sales of commercial vehicle rise each year. Now, China has been the largest commercial vehicle market in the world. Due to the improvement of users' intellectual, usage level and strict requirement of industry standard, the developing trend of commercial vehicle is to be moving art with features of good-looking and easy to use, instead of money-making machine. Meanwhile, the competition between commercial vehicle manufacturers becomes more and more intense, leading to great challenge. How to improve the competitiveness of production becomes the key problem that manufacturers face. The direction of FAW in 13 th Five Year Plan is low carbonization, Intelligence, informatization, high-quality, high-yield which also is the direction of automobile industry. According to the demand of situation, transform from utility-type to comfortable-type is taking place which will enhance the comfort of commercial vehicle.As human-machine operation interface, instrument panel is the core component which is the most sensitive part in users' perception model. Without doubts, instrument panel plays a vital role in interior quality and production competitiveness. Now, technological progress and user's heightened demand cause new challenges such as higher integration level of component, more crowded spatial layout and more complex structure which lead to challenge of improving appearance quality. The application of detailed design method, named dimension engineering can satisfy gaps' design requirements and reduce the impact of manufacture and process deviation to production quality.Nowadays, due to excellent product development capability, advanced design method and high manufacturing level, the detailed level of main commercial vehicle' instrument panel in Europe is ahead. Although, to some extent, detailed level of domestic production rises in recent years, there is a gap between competing productions. As result of the increasing of users' income and intellectual level which is the driving force for prompting the improvement of manufacturers' detailed level OEMs(short for Original Equipment Manufacturer) devote themselves to the improvement of production appearance quality in the way of applying detailed design method. Aiming to prompting users' perception quality and satisfying their demands, FAW carries out her detailed design plan. Also, FAW learns from past experience and conducts benchmarking about competitive production. A series of measures such as optimal modeling design, optimal blocking, detailed structure, application of dimension engineering and strict process control have been done to guarantee productions' detailed level. Meanwhile, comfort level has been improved by the way of optimal layout of component.In this subject, the process and method of detailed design, aiming to improve product competitiveness, are established and optimized. Dimension engineering method is applied to the development process of instrument panel. Using 3DCS, tolerance calculation and analysis according to the dimensional tolerances and position tolerances and assembly positioning and assembly sequence, the key factor to identify the influence of product appearance, so as to optimize the structure, improve product dimensional quality and dimensional stability. With this method, the level of detailed design could be improved in products' development stage, therefore users' perception quality rises. Meanwhile, cost and design cycle in modification can be reduced.The above-mentioned method mainly involves dimension control method and theory of commercial vehicle instrument panel such as structure design, location datum, gap, dimension engineering process improvement, etc. With this method, certain quality problems can be solved in early stage thus the whole design cycle will be shortened. More important, efficiency and quality could be improved. The study of detailed design method is significative to improve productions' competence and helps instrument panel's detailed design level of FAW to step into the forefront.
