High speed trains occupy a significant role in the transportation system of China, and much attention has been paid to its comfort performance and safety performance in recent years. In order to improve the ride comfort performance and the running safety performance of high speed trains, one of the most effective ways is to reduce the lateral vibrations of the train when running on the track through controlling the suspension system. Therefore, the control strategy of the suspension system is particularly important. In view of that the semi-active suspension with superior comprehensive performances is widely used in the high speed train suspension systems, the semi-active control strategies in the past few decades have been paid widespread concerned and have made considerable progress. However, with the further raising speed of high-speed trains, the performance of the semi-active control strategies will inevitably be put forward to higher levels,so it is necessary to explore more effective control strategies of semi-active suspension system. This thesis first summarizes the research progresses of control strategies of semi-active suspension system, and then introduces the semi-active control strategies based on skyhook damping control methodology and advanced control theories. The advantages and disadvantages of these strategies are thoroughly analyzed. On the basis of sufficient investigations, this thesis focuses on improving the performances of high-speed trains, including the ride comfort and running safety performances. We propose three control strategies for the semi-active suspension system,i.e.,the semi-active safety control strategy for high speed trains based on skyhook control, the comfort-oriented hybrid control strategy for semi-active suspension of high speed trains based on groundhook control and Rakheja-Sankar control, and the semi-active control scheme aiming to improve the running safety of trains based on a half-car model. In addition,to evaluate the comprehensive performances of the control strategies proposed,a full-scale railway vehicle model is established using the ADAMS/Rail software package and co-simulations are carried out under different conditions. Moreover, the co-simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed control strategies. Finally, the research work is summarized, and some problems which need to be studied further are pointed out.
