Water resource is one of the irreplaceable natural resource in sustainable development of social economy. However, due to the uncertainty of spatial division, that is,the spatial distribution of water resource in China is inconsistent with regional economy and population distribution, which makes the synergetic development of water resource, population and economy limited. Therefore,it is of great significance to study the spatial matching of water resource to coordinate the balanced allocation of water resource, population and economy. In this paper,it is reviewed research literature, matching literature, population and economic agglomeration literature and Gini coefficient method systematically.Based on the Gini coefficient method,it is calculated the matching condition of the water resource, population and economy.Besides, the two dimensions of time and space are analyzed synthetically, and the factors influencing the spatial matching of water resource are discussed after obtaining the analysis result. The results of the study are as follows:(1)During the study period, the overall water resource-population matching and water resource-economic matching are not ideal.Respectively, they are in the condition of not matching and highly mismatching, showing that water resource-population matching is better than water resource-economic matching.(2)The spatial matching of water resource in the eastern, central, western and northeastern regions show that the matching situation of the water resource in the eastern region is similar to that of the sample city, and the matching degree is basically stable and slightly worse;Because of the influences of economic and population agglomeration, the matching condition of midland is fluctuated. The matching situation of the western region is relatively stable but tends to be better, and the water resource-population matching is obviously better than the water resource-the economic matching. The spatial matching of water resources in the northeastern region shows the path of the first U-shaped and then inverted U-shaped,that is,the spatial matching of the population and the economy becomes better.(3)Based on the analysis of the factors that may affect the spatial matching of water resource and the empirical analysis based on the two-stage dynamic generalized moment model,it shows that the international trade, industrial structure, economic development potential and development requirements are all influencing the water resource space matching. In view of the characteristics of the spatial mismatch between water resource and the large variation of matching between different regions,it is necessary to relax the population flow and appropriately restrict the degree of economic agglomeration from the perspective of optimal spatial matching.Besides,it is important for different regions from their own regional development situation, combined with the local resource endowments to promote economic and social development. What should be pointed out is that the promotion of population and economic agglomeration is an important means of optimizing the allocation of resources.
