With the development of social culture and constructional technology,human beings have gradually entered globalization in various fields.The aftermath of the wave of modernism since the 20 th century is still rippling in the field of contemporary architecture.In the waves of epochal ideological trends,the creation of contemporary architecture showed a flourishing situation,but pursuit of weird forms and excessive commercial tendencies are also inevitably appeared.It is undeniable that the spirit of modernity which represented by modernism was largely the pursuit of democracy,openness and freedom of human society,but the problems like excessive emphasis of functional reason,the worship of technology and the neglect of emotion were also exposed,thus even the creation of genius loci and the spatial expression of emotions in the materiality of architecture.Into the 1960’s,the aesthetic orientation dominated by commercial culture and popular culture has led the architectural form into the situation of popularity and commerciality — even vulgarity and excessive commerciality.On the other hand,with the globalization of commerce and culture,the ideology of western culture is spreading throughout the world.As the assimilation of thoughts and aesthetic standards are becoming global,the local characteristics and genius loci are forced to disappear.As a solution to the contemporary architectural problem,the tectonic theory pushed the materiality of architecture to a new height in the contemporary context.Based on the philosophical concept of perceptual phenomenology,the tectonic theory thinks that the very essence of architecture is materiality over the abstract concepts such as plan,space and skin.Meanwhile,the material nature of architecture is only the tools and means of tectonic theory,its ultimate goal is to rebuild the spiritual function of the architectural space,which can be feelings of locality,the genius loci or more delicate personal feelings.So,the tectonic is the very means of materiality to give emotional infection to space.If the tectonic theory is a product of the double critic of the excessive mechanization of modernism and the over-commercialization of post-modernism,then the tectonic theory is,on the one hand,confrontation to the mechanical aesthetics of neglecting the emotional and spiritual functions of modernism;on the other hand,is the critic on the post-modernist commercial vulgarization which made a great clamor.Therefore,to solve the crisis of locality in contemporary social residence,the disappearance of genius loci and the indifference of emotion,tectonic theory provided a new thought and method.After the Cold War,contemporary society experienced the sustained and prosperous economic growth,the quality of human residential environment has also been greatly improved,while problems such as the lack of spiritual identity,the lack of local emotional end and the disappearance of community cohesion are still a major challenge for residential environment which troubled human habitation.Under such epochal background,the construction and awakening of architectural monumentality became an important means to solve those problems,which can bring spiritual identity and emotional end to different social groups,and also to improve the cohesion of society.The so-called monumentality,is the property that the material carrier and behavioral carrier has to conserve and evoke people’s feelings and memory;thus,the architectural monumentality,is not only in monumental buildings — it is a cultural property that the architecture or landscape has to conserve and evoke people’s feelings and memory.Having a long space,the monumental space is one of the oldest forms of human society.As the human civilization developing,the significance and content of monumentality are also constantly changing.The development of monumentality has experienced the process from natural worship of the ancient times to the religious consciousness,from the embodiment of the will of power to the domination of political discourse,from the collective spiritual appeal to the pluralistic expression.Based on the contemporary context,for the human social problems mentioned above,the monumentality needs interpretation and creation in the perspective of tectonics,to obtain new ideas and methods.The emotion of monumental space under the view of tectonics abandoned the monumentality in a traditional sense which expresses the will to power dominant by the political discourse,but focus on emotions which is more delicate,more human caring,and closer to humanity.The monumental space under the view of tectonics inherits the material means of the tectonic theory,and has a critical confrontation to the mechanical aesthetics with a simplified spiritual function by the modernism.Therefore,it has possessed more spatial expression and emotional capability which can cause emotional resonance and spiritual identity that more extensive,more profound,so that the monumental architectural space can be more emotionally appealing.Memorial space can solve the social problems in contemporary cities,so the monumentality should be put into the overall tectonics of urban space.In the monumental tectonics of the city’s overall space,this paper analyzed three closely related understanding perspectives and solutions—the gradient distribution of the monumental space,the social perception of the monumental emotion,and the public participation of the commemorative activity.In simple terms,through the computer technology,transform the monumental emotions of social individual and group into intuitive digital information,and then,use the Internet technology in commemorate the activities of public participation.Thus,combining with digital information of social perception,in the circumstance that needless of the initiative participation of urban citizens,to save time and space and realize so-called “sensing is participation”,and thus develop a new mode of public participation.Finally,according to the data obtained from social perceptual calculation and public participation,the monumental space is divided into different sizes and levels in the concrete measures of an overall urban space,and is distributed to the urban space organically to realize the distribution of the monumental space and emotions in the overall spatial space of the city.As the extension of the thesis research proposition,the gradient distribution of the monumental space,the social perception of the monumental emotion,and the public participation of the commemorative activity together constitute the monumental tectonics in the city’s overall space.
