Study On Generalized Reading Space Design In Public Library In The Information Age

The Public Library,as one important type of cultural architecture,plays an extremely important role in inheriting people's wisdom,cultural development and social progress.The sacred responsibility shouldered by the Public Library,makes it be high concerned by society at any time.For thousands of years,countless public libraries emerge at the historic moment,many of which have become everlasting classics.Today,we have already entered the Age of Information,the Digitalization of knowledge carrier,the diversify of cultural transmission and the socialization of Public Library have promoted its function and space become pluralistic,make it the social Cultural Center and the Information Center.In the design of many public libraries,reader's diversified reading behavior has overflowed from the Reading Space,migrating to the every corner of the building,which also brings the generalization of space.Most of the communal space in Public Library could transform into some kind of new space,which could sustain reader's diversified reading behavior,though the generalization of space and function.Although it has been a common phenomenon in modern public libraries,there are only a few researches in this area,especially lacking of in-depth research.Based on this situation,this paper takes Public Library as the main research content,introduces into the concept of " Generalized Reading Space".Basing on the investigation and analysis of outstanding public libraries,this paper redefines the concept of " Generalized Reading Space",demonstrates the feature of it,then concludes its design principles and its design methods.What's more,this paper also refines the conclusion with the introduction of a practical program.I hope my study could raise readers' and designers' awareness of"Generalized Reading Space" and guide practice,providing useful recommendation and suggestion for better use of Public Library in the Information Age.The paper contains six chapters:The first chapter describes the background and the significance of this subject;makes a clear explanation of the object and domain of this study;lists the contemporary progress and research achievements closely related to this study;defines the research method and research framework.The second chapter bases on the review of developing history and developing process of Public Library,analyses it's social rules in the Information Age,discusses its main function composing and space evolution.Moreover,this chapter also introduces the phenomenon:some kind of new reading space has occurred and popularized in modern public libraries.The third chapter introduces the concept of " Generalized Reading Space",make further improvements and developments of it,elaborates its design objects and design orientation in Public Library,analyses its main causes and positive impacts,concludes its primary characteristics.The forth chapter classifies the typical types of generalized reading space in Public Library,basing on their specific space forms,proposes the primary design principle of the Generalized Reading Space at macro-level,and then analyzes the spatial properties and characteristics of different kind of generalized reading space,affords their concrete operation technique at micro-level.The fifth chapter studies on the library of Nanjing forestry university,analyzes the application of the design principles and design tactics,strengthening the research conclusions.The sixth chapter sum up the study achievement,introspect and prospect.
