To ensure that the ship has adequate stability, countries have developed appropriate stability criteria to avoid disaster, but it doesn’t mean absolute safety. Actually, many accidents occurred due to loss of stability. It illustrates our cognition of ship’s stability is still insufficient, and that we urgently need to develop more sophisticated criteria to guide the ship design and operation, thereby reducing the incidental capsize accident.Dead-Ship Stability is one of the primary modes of stability failures on the Second Generation Intact Stability Criteria that is establishing now. The research on the draft criteria can provide a basis for the final establishment of Second Generation Intact Stability Criteria. The research also can provide guidance for original design of the ship. This paper is based on vulnerability assessment for dead-ship stability failure mode of second-generation intact stability criteria. This paper describes the method of Level 2 vulnerability criteria of dead ship, which is submitted by Italy. First, this paper calculates the capsizing probability and analyses sensitivity factors for the capsize index. Then, the ship’s motion model in waves is set up and the capsizing probability is calculated combining with Monte - Carlo method. Finally, this paper compares two calculation methods and put forward reasonable suggestions for the dead ship stability calculations.
