In the social period with rapid development of Chinese cities and the expansion of urban construction land,issues including how to avoid the spread of the urban built areas,cultivated land erosion and the emergence of a large number of villages inside the city have got sufficient attention from experts and scholars.Consequently,the compact city theory focusing on sustainable development strategy has become more and more significant in recent years.Solving urban problems requires not only qualitative analysis but also quantitative methodology which makes compactness measurement increasingly important.Considering that the fast development,complete facility layout and smooth traffic structure of Shenzhen Nanshan District have a strong representativeness and typicality,this paper takes Nanshan District as the research object with the focus on its internal compactness measurement with the research route of identifying problems-technical summary – result deduction.The single measurement and integrated index measurement of the compact degree are analyzed in this paper.In view of the problems in urban development,the research objectives and contents are idnentified.The measurement system and research methodology of this paper are designed based on literature review of the compact city.Based on the main connotation of compact city,that is,with the major factors of high density,compact forms,function compatibility and urban efficiency,methods of spatial analysis and integrated index system of GIS are adopted.By collecting data of population,buildings and land use,etc.,the city compact degree of Nanshan District is measured in terms of single index and integrated index syst em.Longitudinal comparative analysis is conducted.Density,function,structure and efficiency are first introduced and further analyzed as the measurement index.With the analysis results,the single index is weighed to explore the expressive modes and c ontents of comprehensive index system and a complete set of measurement system is hence established.In the end,by horizontal comparison of the measurement and designed development,the optimization goal of internal compact degree of Nanshan District is proposed and strategies are put forward.On the basis of extant literature,this research,positioned at middle and microcosmic perspectives,aims to provide reference for compactness research by establishing a measurement index system.It is hoped that thi s research will contribute to the quantitatization of compact city research.
