Walking has always been one of the most important modes of transportation, and in mountainous cities, walking is of special significance. The walking system in traditional mountainous cities, called "Mountain Trails",in the process of high-speed urbanization has been neglected and marginalized. Its function gradually weakened, the environment worsened, and even become the city's negative space; At the same time, with the diversified development of society, people's needs are increasingly diversified. The walking system,as an important part of mountainous cities' characteristics,in addition to the basic function of traffic and communication, its new values are increasingly prominent, including historical and cultural heritage, showing urban landscape, shaping urban image, fitness, entertainment as well as sightseeing.Chongqing is one of the relatively concentrated areas of mountainous cities in China, where almost all mountainous cities and towns have long-history,rich-shape,distinctive "Mountain Trails." Faced with these challenges and opportunities as above, whether it is the needs of local citizens or foreign tourists,or the overall quality of the cities, these "Mountain Trails" are needed to transformat through optimization. On the other hand,Urban design is a comprehensive planning and design, but also an effective way to guide following implementation and management. As all know, the central city-work conference in 2015 proposed to strengthen the urban design and improve the level of urban design,it asked government and all departments should attach great importance to the importance of urban design and urgency, fully carried out,do a good job of urban design work.In this context,it is necessary to put forward the urban design strategies for the re-planning and design of the mountainous-city walking system in Chongqing. The study on these strategies is based on theoretical analysis and case interpretation, with "transition" as the premise. The main body of the thesis is composed of four main parts. The first part, that is,the first chapter.Outline the relevant background from the origin of this study, then show the core of this study: in the transformation of mountainous-city walking system from Chongqing, how to put forward the corresponding urban design strategies. Then define the scope and content of the study, elaborate the relevant concepts and review the relevant research.Clear the purpose, meaning and way of the study. Finally, build the framework of the paper. The second part, that is,the second chapter.Analytic the research subject, that's mountainous-city walking system, from the basic composition, the main features,to its values and significance.Understanding of its general attributes as urban walking system, but also it has the particularity of mountainous city. This chapter is the basis for following study. The third part, that is,the third chapter. For the core issues, the study starts from researching development of the subject, then promote the main problems and their performance in mountainous-city walking system in Chongqing at present, which cause its transformation. Then, the possible directions of the transformation as well as the approach of urban design are put forward. At the same time, based on that the renewal of walking system in Chongqing Yuzhong Peninsula has made good effect,it is reasonable to take it as a successful practical case to study. The fourth part, that is,the fourth, fifth and sixth chapters.Based on the relevant theory and the practical case study,to build a framework of Urban Design Strategies for Transformation of Mountainous-city Walking System in Chongqing, including the overall goals and principles,system-design strategies,place-design strategies, and guidance strategies. Then, through the practical project, named Urban Design of Fengjie County,as an examples to confirm the rationality and feasibility of the framework. These chapters elaborate and show study results of both theory and practice. Finally, make a summary of this study.
