The research and application of Glubam,which is a new type of building material,is still in its early stage.The potential of Glubam to be used in building structures is far from being excavated,especially when it comes to large-span space structure.However,as more and more large-span buildings continue to spring up,and people request more in low carbon and environmental protection of buildings,research on how to apply Glubam to large-span space structure is very necessary.Bases on the existing research of Glubam,this paper tries to combine Glubam with steel together to build a hybrid truss.By designing new nodes,adopting new process,flexibly using steel-Glubam-steel bolt connections and Glubam-steel-Glubam bolt connections,a hybrid truss,which is beautiful,environmentally friendly and excellent in mechanical performance,is successfully designed and constructed.In order to fully understand the mechanical performance of this hybrid space truss,an orthogonal spatial square pyramid grid with the dimension of 2.4 m by 3.6 m is being tested.According to the results and analysis of both the low-stress loading test and the destruction test,the mechanical characteristics and failure mode of this hybrid truss are obtained.Test results show that the new type of steel-Glubam hybrid truss has an ultimate bearing capacity of 233kN,and the newly designed connections are very reliable.Structure failure is brittle,and it is caused by the buckling of the Glubam web element.This paper also uses SAP2000 to simulate the destruction test and compares the results of finite element analysis with experimental results.Comparing shows that the simulation is basically reliable but it still can be improved.FEM can be helpful for parametric analysis and optimal design of the hybrid truss in the future.Steel-glubam hybrid truss has many advantages,such as less steel required,beautiful shape,high bearing capacity and good deformation performance.Thus,further research and development on steel-glubam hybrid truss would be worthy.
