Biochar is a kind of black solid material, which is produced by pyrolysis under the condition of limited oxygen, and with carbon as the main content and has strong adsorption ability. A plug-seedling study was conducted to explore the effects of biochar,as a medium solely or together with peat, vermiculite and compost, on the effect of tomato and rape biological traits, photosynthetic characteristics and nutrient uptake. The results revealed that:1. Biochar could increase the seedling emergence rate of tomato and rape, the seedling emergence rate of BCCT(biochar together with peat) treatment was the highest, up to 100.00%,both in tomato and rape test. Biochar as a medium could increase the seedling emergence rate compared with ZS(vermiculite) and DF(compost) treatment of tomato. Biochar as a medium could increase the seedling emergence rate of rape from 7.69% to 33.33%.2. Biochar as a medium could improve the plant height of tomato. BC(biochar) treatment was higher compared with ZS,C T(peat) and DF treatments before harvest. Biochar applied together with compost or the peat had improve compared with other solely applied treatments. Meanwhile, the healthy index of rape of biochar, BC,BC DF(b iochar together with compost) and BCCT treatments were significantly increased, respectively, compared with the ZS treatment.3. The photosynthetic rate of plants was improved in the experiment when biochar applied solely or together with compost for tomato compared with vermiculite applied solely. Biochar applied together with compost could increase rape photosynthetic rate compared with vermiculite, peat and compost applied solely.4. The tomato biomass of BC treatment was significantly increased by 34.12-62.94%, compared with ZS treatment. Meanwhile, compared with ZS and CT treatments, the yield of rape was significantly increased for BC ZS(biochar together with vermiculite) treatment and BCDF treatment.5. Tomato root activity of BC treatment was significantly increased compared with CT and ZS treatments. BCCT treatment showed the highest soluble sugar content in rape, which was significantly increased by 3.19% and 21.60% compared with other treatments.
