Plant volatiles are important cues for the orientation of herbivorous insects. It is possible that these compounds indicate whether the plant is suitable for feeding and larval development, or for mating aggregation. The aim of this study was to identify the bioactive components within asparagus by gas chromatography-electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), and to test the antennal and behavioural responses of Isoceras sibirica females to these chemicals, then to trap in the field.GC-EAD and GC-MS experiments indicated that ?. sibirica antennae responded to the following volatile compounds from asparagus:hexanal; a-pinene; 2-ethyl-2-hexenal; ?-pinene; p-cymene; limonene; ocimene; linalool; nonanal; a-terpineol and geraniol. EAG experiments indicated that ?. sibirica antennae responded strongly to the following volatile compounds from asparagus:hexanal; 2-ethyl-2-hexenal; p-cymene. In flight-tunnel tests that involved females and rubber septa loaded with subsets of these 11 compounds, we found that the 11-component blend(Blends-1) elicited equivalent levels of upwind flight as asparagus stems. Among them the components hexanal,2-ethyl-2-hexenal, p-cymene and a-terpineol appeared to be important components, removal of any of them from Blends-1 resulted in a significant decrease in female upwind flight responses. To avoid a large number of repeated experiments, the software named Design expert 8.0.6 was used and the result indicated that the doses of hexanal,2-ethyl-2-hexenal, p-cymene, a-terpineol and geraniol were 12.5 mg,20 mg,20 mg,12.5 mg and 12.5 mg respectively, averagely 15 female moths in a trap were get every day. When the doses of hexanal,2-ethyl-2-hexenal, p-cymene, a-terpineol and geraniol were 20 mg,12.5 mg,20 mg,12.5 mg and 12.5 mg respectively, averagely 14.6 female moths in a trap were get every day.Our findings suggest that host volatiles play an important role in ?. sibirica host recognition.
