This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of adding rice bran and corn on silage characteristics and fermentation quality of potato vines and the effect of silage on rumen fermentation in vitro. There are two experiments.Experiment 1: Effect of adding rice bran and corn on silage characteristics and fermentation quality of potato vines.A completely randomized design was used and there were five treatments with each treatment 6 replicates.Five treatments were potato vines alone,85% potato vines + 15% rice bran,82% potato vines + 15% rice bran + 3% corn,80% potato vines + 15% rice bran + 5% corn,78% potato vines + 15% rice bran + 7% corn.Silage was prepared by using a small vacuum plastic bag in the laboratory. The silos were kept at room temperature(16?~22?),and the silage quality was analyzed after 45 days.Compared with potato vines, rice bran and corn had higher dry matter(DM)and water soluble carbohydrate(WSC)contents and lower buffering capacity(BC).With the addition of rice bran and corn,BC of the mixed material decreased,DM and WSC increased.Ensiling potato vines alone had the lowest quality with the highest p H(up to 7.07),ammonia nitrogen(NH3-N),acetic acid(AA),butyric acid(BA)and lactic acid / acetic acid(LA/AA)and the lowest sensory scoring and lactic acid(LA).Adding rice bran significantly improved the quality of silage. The p H,NH3-N,AA,BA and LA / AA decreased significantly, sensory scoring and lactic acid were significantly improved.Adding corn further improved the silage quality. But there were no difference among the three corn adding treatments(P>0.05).Only the lactic acid in 7% corn group was significantly higher than that in the 3% group. With the increasing of corn,BA decreased significantly and it was not detected in the 7% group.Adding rice bran and corn increased the DM,neutral detergent fiber(NDF)and acid detergent fiber(ADF)(P<0.05)of the silage and decreased the crude protein(CP)(P<0.05).Experiment 2: Effect of potato vines silage on rumen fermentation in vitro using RUSITECThe 8 fermenters of the Rusitec were divided into two treatments: T1(whole corn silage)group and T2(potato vines silage)and there were four replicates in each treatment and one fermenter per replicate. The methane production(CH4)for T2 was 50% lower than that for T1(P<0.05).The total gas production had the similar results although there was no significant difference(P = 0.085).Ruminal p H at 3,6,9 and 12 h,acetic acid and acetic /propionic acid(A/P)were lower for T2 than those of T1(P<0.05).The BA and total acids(TA)were higher for T2 than those for T1(P<0.05).The total nitrogen(TN),NH3-N and microbial nitrogen for T2 were higher than those for T1(P <0.05).The silage had no effect on the degradation rate of nutrients(P>0.05).In conclusion, the fresh potato vines alone is not easy to make good quality silage.Adding rice bran and corn can improve the quality of silage and the optimal mixing level was 15% rice bran and 5% corn.Compare with the whole corn silage, potato vines silage increased butyric acid, total acid, total nitrogen,NH3-N and microbial nitrogen content and decreased acetic acid and acetic/propionic and methane production.potato vines silage tends to improve the energy utilization and alleviate the methane pollution.
