Four trials were conducted to investigated the effects of mixing potato vines with different materials on silage quality and the effects of potato vines mixed silage on rumen fermentation.Trial 1:Study on the effect of ensiling potato vines and corn stalk. There were 7treatments?potato vines alone,50%potato vines+50%corn stalk,40%potato vines+60%corn stalk,30%potato vines+70%corn stalk,20%potato vines+80%corn stalk,10%potato vines+90%corn stalk and corn stalk alone?with 4 replicates each.Compared with potato vines silage alone, silage quality was significantly improved with adding of corn stalk. With the increasing ratio of corn stalk, sensory score?SC?and content of lactic acid?LA?were increased?P<0.05?,pH and content of ammonia nitrogen?NH3-N?,acetic acid?AA?and butanoic acids?BA?were decreased?P<0.05?.Dry matter?DM?,neutral detergent fiber?NDF?and acid detergent fiber?ADF?of potato vines mixed silage were higher than potato vines silage alone and crude protein?CP?content was lowe?P<0.05?.Trial 2:Effects of potato vines and corn stolk mixed silage on the rumen fermentation characteristics of sheep in vitro.A complete one-factor randomized design was used.Eight fermentation tanks of Rusitec system were divided into two groups with 4 replicates per group.Corn stalk silage and potato vines mixed silage were used to prepare diets for sheep.Compared with corn stalk silage, potato vines mixed silage increased the gas production, contents of total nitrogen?TN?,NH3-N?except 3 h after feed replacement?,microbial nitrogen for whole period, and propionic acid?PA?content at 6 and 9 h?P<0.05?,and decreased methane production, ruminal pH at 3 h,AA at 9 h,and AA/PA at 6 and 9 h?P<0.05?.Nutrients degradation rate and other rumen fermentation parameters were not affected by treatments?P>0.05?.Trial 3:Study on the effect of mixing potato vines and sweet sorghum. There were 7treatments?potato vines alone,50%potato vines+50%sweet sorghum,40%potato vines+60%sweet sorghum,30%potato vines+70%sweet sorghum,20%potato vines+80%sweet sorghum,10%potato vines+90%vines and vines alone?with 4 replicates each.Compared with potato vines silage alone, mixing sweet sorghum improved the silage quality. With the increasing ratio of sweet sorghum,SC and LA content were increased?P<0.05?,pH,NH3-N,AA and BA were decreased continuously?P<0.05?.DM,NDF and ADF of mixed silage were higher than those of potato vines silage alone, while CP was lower than potato vines silage alone?P<0.05?.Trial 4:Effects of potato vines and sweet sorghum mixed silage on the rumen fermentation characteristics of sheep in vitro.A complete one-factor randomized design was used. The two groups were sweet sorghum silage and potato vines mixed silage.Compared with sweet sorghum silage group, potato vines silage increased gas production,AA at 0 and 3h and decreased degradation rate of DM?P<0.05?,methane production,NH3-N at 3 h?P<0.05?.The results indicated that the fresh potato vines alone can not be made good quality silage and mixing green corn stalk or sweet sorghum can improve the fermentation quality. Two types of potato vines mixed silage had no adverse effects on in vitro rumen fermrntation and can reduce methane pollution, promote the utilization of energy and nitrogen in ruminants compared with corn stalk or sweet sorghum silage.
