This experiment was conducted by using the male sterility materials O-9 and O-6 of pepper and their corresponding maintainer lines as experiment materials,utilizing field experiment combined with laboratory analysis to conduct a deep study of pepper male sterility and its mechanism from aspects of plant morphology,physiology,biochemistry and cytology.The experiment went through the following processes:observing and comparing the plant shapes and floral organ characters of the male sterility lines with those of their corresponding maintainer lines;measuring the pollen vitality and the amount of pollen in a single anther of the male sterility lines and their corresponding maintainer lines;The experiment materials was planted in five stage phases,measuring the dynamic changes in the POD activity and SOD activity of the experiment materials with the growing of flower buds,and further studying the impact of the accumulation of soluble sugar,soluble protein,free proline and MDA on pepper male sterility;employing paraffin slice method to study the growing process of the microspores of the materials from the angle of cytology.The results are as follows:1.The anthers of male sterility materials were small,shrivelled and had none or few pollens with stamens evidently higher than pistils while the anthers of their corresponding maintainer lines grew normally and had a large amount of pollens with stamens nearly level with pistils.2.Results made through cytological observation demonstrated that the microspores of male sterility materials aborted during the stage of tetrads because the tapetum cells were overflowed with vacuoles,and therefore the tetrads were crushed,broken and then degraded and therefore failed to become formal pollen grain.It fell out that during the stage of monoclear microspores,the cytoplasm was degraded into an empty shell.3.The soluble sugar content and soluble protein content of the flower buds of the male sterility materials were lower than those of the maintainer lines during the growing process of flower buds that the highest content of soluble sugar in maintainer line than the two sterile lines were 22%,43% respectively,and the content of soluble protein during the highest maintainer than the two sterile lines were 45%,55% respectively;The free proline content of the male sterility materials was on the decline during the growing process of flower buds and 73.41?g / g and 62.29?g / g respectively,at the maturation stage of pollen grains while those of the maintainer lines accumulated quickly and the content of 339.25?g / g.The POD activity of the male sterility materials was lower than their maintainer lines.The peroxidase activity and MDA content of the male sterility materials were higher than the maintainer lines.The content of MDA was 25% and 66% higher than that of maintainer line.4.In the sowing-by-stages method,although there are some changes there is no significant difference in physiological indexes,the soluble protein content,soluble sugar content,free proline content,MDA content,SOD activity,peroxidase activity of the male sterility materials,during the growing process of flower buds reached climax at the third sowing stage.The peaked at the first sowing stage.The peroxidase activity was lowest at the third sowing stage.5.Two male sterile materials abortion by gene control with genetic characteristics of the generation.
